When Fox Corp., ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to combine the linear feeds of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, SECN, ACCN, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS and truTV into a mega-sports streamer, the joint venture did not have a name (but eventually was named “Venu Sports“).
With no name forthcoming, the name “Spulu” was created as a tongue-in-cheek way to refer to the service without a name created by combining the word “sports” with “Hulu,” the popular Disney-owned streaming giant known for its breadth of content.
There’s no indication that Spulu will be the actual name used. In fact, it’s probably unlikely the company would use the name for fear of creating brand confusion between it and Hulu.
In related news, the recent combination of Disney+ and Hulu also spurred a similar (but not real) name — “Dulu,” a combination of “Disney” and “Hulu.”
ESPN, Fox and WBD will each own 33.33% of the venture. Hearst, in turn, owns 20% of ESPN, with Disney holding the other 80%.
