CNN and the Weather Channel are both using augmented reality to help explain the science behind Hurricane Matthew.
CNN is using its Atlanta weather center studio, which features a chroma key floor that allows the network to digitally insert graphics both on the floor itself and coming out of it.
As part of its coverage of Hurricane Matthew, the network created a 3D diagram of a hurricane that the forecaster could interact with, explaining how the wind currents interact with each other to form a storm.
Over at the Weather Channel, meanwhile, Jim Cantore used the shows “Lab” set to explain wind sheer by “pulling” a virtual flag pole out of a digital box inserted on the studio floor.
Both networks utilize Vizrt’s Viz Virtual Studio and Viz Engine to power these unique storytelling tools.
